Our Home: Patio Makeover
Do you love the look of a lush container garden? I do. I really do, and if we lived in California, I would have the most beautiful container garden that Pinterest has ever seen. But, since Vegas is not kind to my forgetful mind, my perfectly potted plants look more like a container cementery.
When Walmart asked me to spruce up our outdoors using their plethora of gardening supplies, I set aside my fear and committed to ONE potted plant. Far from a container garden, but a welcomed addition of color and spring to our patio. I research potted plant ideas and tips on how to plant those gorgeous planters gracing the pages of magazines like Better Home and Garden.
Tools for the Perfect Potted Plant
I swoon over large pots, and this 18 inch light weight faux wicker planter from Better Homes and Garden called out my name as soon as a I saw it. (Check out this similar planter by Suncast Wicker).
For my perfect potted plant, I also made sure to have filler to help irrigate the soil. I bought a reusable pot filled made by Garden Genius at my local Walmart that was simple to insert, but you could also use rocks. I also bought an inexpensive stand to keep my potted plant off the concrete. Our home’s previous owners didn’t have enough foresight and, although I scrubbed the patio with a DIY all natural concrete cleaner, the stains persist.
The big pots don’t come with drainage holes, so make sure to use a drill a couple on the bottom of your pot.
After all that, you’re ready to plant your perfect potted plant!
3 Steps to the Perfect Potted Plant
1. In the center, plat a tall plant to serve as the arrangement’s focal point
2. Around the base, use filler blooms to add depth and texture.
3. Towards the rim of your planter, add billowing plants that will grow down or away from the planter.
Follow those three simple steps when designing and you’ll end up with a pretty potted plant! I was shopping at Walmart for groceries and wondered into their outdoor nursery to buy these pink blooms. There wasn’t the most amazing selection of plants, but I loved the convenience. And we were able to get home and right to planting – something that my littler helper was happy to do!
Water the plant thoroughly (not the patio!) and remember to turn your planter occasionally so that the plant receives adequate sunlight from all angles.
I am really pleased with how our potted plant turned out. I love our pretty new BHG planter – it’s well constructed and will certainly out last these pretty blooms.
Do you use containers to plant a garden? Any tips for a novice gardener?

May 6, 2014 at 3:48 pmI love to plant flowers in containers – even if I also have a “real” garden. They are easy to arrange, easy to take care of,(no weeding) and you can move them around…just a very great way of gardening!
