It seems as though the kids simply cannot decide what to be this Halloween. One day they’re excited to be something together, the next, not so much. So instead of spending a bunch on pre-assembled costumes (or risking low stock closer to Halloween), I started to think about siblings costumes that could be pulled together quickly.
So when Walmart asked me to create a DIY Halloween costume, this simple siblings costumes came to mind. Western wear costumes are budget friendly, quick to pull together and uses stuff we have on hand. Since the kids could use new boots, jeans and warm plaid for cooler weather, it was a great chance to kill two birds with one stone!

These sibling DIY Halloween costumes came together with just one Walmart trip and a few things I had on hand. The kids needed boots for the coming months and they loved Walmart’s cowboy boot selection as soon as they saw them. For the price point and the fact these kids grow out of shoes so quickly, the quality is excellent. Faded Glory Girl’s Cowgirl boots are less than $20!
Plaid shirts are perfect for coordinating a western look for siblings (and mom, too). There was plenty of denim jeans styles to choose from also. I picked skinny cuts for both siblings so that their boots would be a focal point of the costumes. But my favorite thing about these DIY Halloween siblings costumes is that most of it can used all season long!
Pre-assembled costumes can become expensive for multiple kids and, since Halloween comes just once a year, it can feel like a waste. I get it though – they’re easy and the kids love picking out a new dress up outfit – but creating a DIY Halloween costume that both kids can wear throughout the winter is definitely easier on the budget.
For these cowboy and cowgirl siblings costumes, all I added were a few of Walmart’s $1 bandannas, a set of costume handcuff and Sheriff badges and a silly faux mustache that was less than $1 for Sebas. Their cowboy hats are waiting for them at Abuela’s house (I left them there on accident), which will complete this duo’s western look. Walmart had a holster with silver buckle and two toy guns in the costume aisle too, but I skipped that part of the costume. Using my L’Oreal black eyeliner (that doesn’t smudge!), I added a few adorable freckles to my girl to complete the look.
All in all, apart from the jeans, boots and stuff we already owned, this DIY Halloween siblings costume was put together for less than $20!
These two had so much fun acting out their most fierce cowgirl and cowboy looks. If nothing else, that’s what I love most about Halloween: the chance to play pretend. Making a DIY Halloween costume for siblings can be simple and budget friendly too, by using what you have on hand and buying only small accessories to complete the looks.
