12 Mother’s Day Songs to Download

We’re getting into the Mother’s Day spirit around here, and what better way than with some of our favorite tunes inspired by this all-consuming role some of us take on. He’s as arrogant as they come, but dang if that dude don’t whip up some music that gets my body moving. If you follow DSM on Instagram, you’d know he makes my little girl shake her thing too 🙂

2. Anthony Hamilton’s MAMA KNEW LOVE

Daddy D and I adore Anthony Hamilton. Anytime he’s in Vegas, we’re there. Our first dance as husband and wife was to a song of his, too. His soulful, pained voice in MAMA KNEW LOVE is one of my all time favorite Mother’s Day songs.

3. Celia Cruz’s Adios Mama & QUIMBARA

A staple to my Cuban childhood, Celia Cruz had to make this list. Her once close, then broken relationship (after the revolution), with her mother is rumored to be the inspiration to such songs as ADIOS MAMA and QUIMBARA.

4. Celine Dion with Andrea Bocelli A MOTHER’S PRAYER

One of my all time favorite songs. The version with Andrea Bocelli makes me think of my dad. And then I think of his mom, my beautiful grandmother (who I called Tita and died when I was 8). And then I start crying.

5. Tupac’s DEAR MAMA

Head bobbin all the way to SoCal. Because who wants to cry all the time?

6. Fantasia’s BABY MAMA

We used to be big American Idol fans and loved that Fantasia started her career there. This song reminds me of my SIL, who is an outstanding single baby mama.

7. Backstreet Boys’ THE PERFECT FAN

Boy band, anyone? Yes, please. Just don’t tell anyone 🙂

8. Boys II Men’s A SONG FOR MAMA

The original boy band.

9. Alicia Keys’ SUPERWOMAN and GIRL ON FIRE

We’re huge A. Keys fans over here. Soul, hip and moral. And she’s gorgeous and mixed. Ok, I’ll stop. My pick was Superwoman. Alina’s was Girl on Fire. Both work perfectly for this list!

10. Christina Aguilera’s OH MOTHER

A beautiful ballad by the infamous bicultural Latina.

11. Martina McBride’s IN MY DAUGHTER’S EYES

I went through a hardcore country music stage in high school and I refuse to let go of many of my favorites. Including Martina’s IN MY DAUGHTER’S EYES.

12. The Shirelles’ MAMA SAID

A classic Mother’s Day song that makes me sing my lungs out. Too old for you youngsters? I’ll bet you a Starbucks coffee that you’ve heard it before.
