The last several weeks have been flurries of boxes and adjustment. The kids have done remarkably well, but in addition to the new environment, cold season is upon us and getting sick would add even more stress to our move from Las Vegas to Southern California. Isn’t it funny how even things we want and are good for us can actually be stressful?
As of today, the kids have eluded any coughs or colds (knock on wood!). By using my 3 secret weapons, passed down from my Latina mom, I plan to keep it that way! For this post, I’m happy to partner with Little Remedies, the company that protects our little ones from colds and coughs with everything they need, without all the junk they don’t. I try to keep my babies healthy by giving them the nutrients they need on a daily basis…. creatively. I’m busy. They prefer sweets over veggies. And fighting them is tiresome. While I would never argue against offering your little ones veggies, I keep their immune systems strong without all the stress too.
3 Secret Weapons to Stay Healthy During Cold Season
Staying healthy during cold and cough season is about keeping your immune system healthy. I keep my babies’ immune systems ready to fight off the ickies with these 3 secret Latina mom tips.
1. Powered Up Oatmeal: I make sure my kids gets a wholesome breakfast that will sustain them through a busy day of childhood adventures. I didn’t really grow up having breakfast each morning, and I think that impacts the way you eat all day long, so I usually give my kids a powered up, homemade oatmeal. It’s jammed pack with lots of good stuff, like: rolled oats, all kinds of berries, pomegranate seeds, chia seeds, flax seed meal, brewer’s nutritional yeast, cinnamon, and other fruits we have on hand. Sometimes I add apple or banana, but generally there are always some type of berry. I cook it on the stove-top using a bit of milk, adding water as needed to thin it out.
It takes the kids a long to eat their homemade oatmeal, but I don’t rush it. I would rather allot extra time for their breakfast then skip it. Who knows if this meal actually keeps my kids healthy, but I certainly think it does.
2. Cough+Immune Support: I’ve been using Little Remedies ® Cough + Immune Support quite often since moving back to Southern California. Something about the change of temperature and humidity really makes all of our bodies feel a little under the weather. I love the company’s “less is more” belief and the fact that each product is made with the fewest and most natural ingredients. Little Remedies® products do not contain any artificial flavors, artificial colors or alcohol and are created with the very specific needs of children in mind.
Little Remedies ® Cough + Immune Support calms a sore throat with the soothing power of elderberry and honey. It contains elderberry; which has 2x the anti-oxidant power of blueberries. No alcohol, saccharin or high-fructose corn syrup. You can give this to kids 1 year and older, and even for adults. The entire family has been taking it at the first sign of a sore throat. Check out the Little Remedies site for my information on the product.
3. Green Smoothies: My kids love smoothies! Do yours? Mine think all smoothies only come in a green color, though, because I add green leafy greens to our recipes. They eat salads, but for the mega-greens that they fight me on, I add those purees to a smoothie and they slurp it up without complaint. Check out my green smoothie post if you’re curious of how I make those!
Keeping our babies healthy is a day-to-day affair, and with a bit of help, we can get through this season without too many coughs or sniffles. That’s the hope anyway!
