At four and a half, my daughter is excited for the world of reading to open the doors to all the wonders of the world. She is constantly telling me, “but mamaaaaaaa, when can I read it ALL!” The fact that she isn’t reading is frustrating, but by offering her simple books – early reader books – in which she can recognize sight words or sound out others, her excitement for literature grows.
I’m at the Tampico Mom Blog this week offering our favorite 5 Early Reader Chapter Book for Little Girls. All of these books we have and love! But, in addition to those, I started researching books I can offer that feed off her love of animals. This is what I came up with.
Here are 5 early reader books that any animal lover will appreciate…
5 Early Reader Books for Animal Lovers
Discover: Early Reader’s Wildlife Photography Book by Discover Press: As a growing realist, my girl is constantly asking me “is that real, mama?” and because I can’t make myself lie, I tell her the truth. Sometimes I say, “what do you think?”, but it’s safe to say that my girl knows the difference between a cartoon rendering of an animal and a photograph of an animal. That’s why I LOVE this wildlife photography series from Discover Press. Kid-sized literature with life-sized imagery. Mother nature is the best illustrator, after all. Check out the full series here.
Three Stores You Can Read To Your Dog by Sara Swan Miller: Fun illustrations and a simple read for parent and animal lover to read to the favorite house pup. Interactive and educational, I’m excited to share this with my early reader… and our little shih-tzu, Rico.
Critter Club by Callie Barkley: I shared this one in the article for Tampico Mom Blog, but it deserves repeating. I love the lessons of friendship, generosity and compassion, and you know the pretty picture of this little brown girl doesn’t escape me, either.
Dog Diaries: Secret Writings of the WOOF Society by Betsey Byars: There is so much to learn about the breeds and origins of dogs in this cute, children’s book! There is also a cat version in this series, but my girl has a special place in her heart for dogs.
Disney Animal Stories by Sarah Heller: A hardcover book with thick, glossy pages, this book will be perfect for bedtime reading. I know a couple Disney lovers that will enjoy reading about the fury heroes in Disney iconic stories.Do you have favorite animal loving books to recommend for my early reader? We love hearing what others are reading!
