To say I am pleased with the Las Vegas Library District is an understatement. As a Vegas blog, it is a wonderful resource for so many reasons. Alina and I visit our local library at least once a week for storytime or other special events, many weeks we go even more. The Young People’s area of the library is perfectly suited for tiny readers. The shelves are situated at the perfect height for little ones, and not jammed too tightly so small fingers can grad their treasure off the shelf with ease. Alina and I arrive to an event early, or stay later, so that I can sit on the ground towards the end of the aisle, while Alina walks up and down looking for just the perfect book. I love to watch how deliberate she is in her selections. I still haven’t figure out what draws her to one book over the other though. The shape, size, width of the book’s spine, there is nothing random about how she chooses her reads. Alina then brings the book to me {saying book, but it sounds like “boooo”. No “k”.} and crawls into my lap. She sits there while I narrate the entire thing {mostof the time}. As soon as I’m done, she jumps right up and dashes down the aisle to find her next goldmine. I can’t tell you how much pleasure this brings me.
Each week, she becomes more aware of what we do at the library. Each week she understands the concept of storytime a bit more. I am excited for when we can engross ourselves in wonderful Children’s literature. I love that my Vegas blog helps me to document this beloved tradition my girl and I have established from a young age.
Visit Las Vegas Clark County Library District’s web page for youth events to learn more about your local library’s schedule of events. Or instead, head down to your local library and pick up their catalog! The catalog is very easy to use. Storytimes schedules are broken up by category {baby, toddler, five and under, family, etc} and by library branch, so its very easy to find a day and time that works for you. A special events page lists all the extra fun events available to you, listed with descriptions and age appropriateness. Take a good look at this page, since not every program is available at every branch. We like to become familiar with other branches for these fun events, while sticking to homebase for storytime.
I hope that your family loves the library as much as mine does. I know that as Alina grows, I will find so many additional uses for this great space of learning. How does your family utilize the library and all its wonderful resources?

March 23, 2011 at 4:20 amI’m sorry to say that we don’t go nearly enough. Adrian gets too loud and his excitement means he’ll only get worse, not better the longer we’re there. I do always intend to go more, and hopefully one day as I get a better hold on everything we’ll be more regulars.
