How To Talk To Your Barber For This Fly Boys Faux Hawk

black boy fade haircuts

Here’s my little Papi looking all fly with his brand new boys faux hawk! Isn’t he so cute? When he was just an itty baby with curls growing every which way it didn’t occur to me how much I would enjoy these cool little boy haircuts. But I do. Fade, tapers, crew cuts… oh my!

So while I love and cherish every haircut my son has gotten, I’ve also learned how to talk to your barber to get exactly the desired look.

Black Boys Haircuts

These little black boy haircuts are just about the cutest things I’ve ever seen. Watching his afro curly hair transform into an even, clean cut makes me wonder who he’ll be years from now. While I don’t want my mixed babies to grow up any faster than they are, I love the little personalities they’re growing into!

But of all the black boys haircuts my dude has had, the first buzz cut probably makes me the weepiest. Just look at his baby face!!!

Now that my son is a bit older, we’ve been browsing some cool haircuts for boys online. I feel ready to let him go all the way with fade haircuts (meaning a skin fade). I’m not sure why this was such a big deal to me. Maybe because I love his baby curls so much and these black boy fade haircuts I see on the internet look so mature and grown.

Anyway, he’s been asking for various trendy haircuts that he sees his friends at Kindergarten coming to school with so I let him choose his next cut… under two conditions!

  1. That we keep his length on top so that later on we can do an adorable curly man bun! Ha!
  2. We keep his hairline natural and not lined-up.

So with that, and daddy’s approval, my little boy walked into the shop to get his first curly boys faux hawk!

Believe it or not, I had to fire our last barber. I know, so bougie of me. But man, I asked the lady NOT to line up his hairline, went on and on about how I want my baby to look like a little boy for as long as possible, and guess what this chick did…..

Yup.

I was so peeved.

Since then I’ve learned how important it is to know exactly how to talk to your barber to get the haircut you want. For this cut we just walked into our local Supercuts (which is way more expensive! Who knew?) and I’m happy with how it turned out.

So here’s exactly what I said to get this look…

Low fade haircut (which will the barber you want the fade to start lower down the head, leaving more hair to transition up) boys mohawk with a skin fade to a 4 clip. Even out the top curls, but leave the length. Taper on the sides without any hard lines. No line ups! Leave hairline natural.

I’m partial to his curls, so this morning for school I wet his hair to bring back his pretty tresses. I thought the boy hairstyle was super cute… but little man was not happy!

He loves the way the barber picked out his hair to create this high top with his afro curls in full display and kept telling me, “I just love my afro, mama!” My heart surged with pride.

I do too, baby boy. I do too.
