Easy Irish Soda Bread Recipe: Cultural Activity for Kids

Ireland Cultural Party: Irish Soda Bread Recipe

I can’t believe it’s been a year since our first culture party! In honor of St. Patrick’s Day, we learned about Ireland and also made Irish Soda Bread. With March 17th quickly approaching, I thought I would finally share the easy soda bread recipe that Alina made. I got all our ingredients at Walmart, our one stop shop, and thank them for sponsoring this post!

Cooking alongside our little ones is a great way to embrace culture. We decided to make homemade Irish soda bread to learn more about Ireland. Soda bread is a thick, dense bread used alongside of stews and such. It was probably used to soak up the liquids, since the bread is not made with eggs or other ingredients that make a bread moist. It was, however, very yummy and the perfect accompaniment to our Irish stew. It is said that an X is marked into the loaf before baking to ward off the devil.

Soda bread is also very easy, and fun, to make!

Irish Soda Bread Ingredients

4 cups all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon baking soda
1 teaspoon salt
1 -1 1/2 cup buttermilk
Directions
Pre-heat oven to 425 degrees F. Brush a baking sheet with melted butter or spray with non-stick spray. Combine dry ingredients in a deep bowl. Gradually stir in 1 cup buttermilk, beating constantly, until dough is firm enough to be gathered into a ball. If dough crumbles, add up to 1/2 cup more buttermilk, 1 tbsp at a time, until it holds together. Place on a lightly floured board and pat into an 8-inch flattened round loaf. Place loaf on baking sheet and slash a “X” into the top of the dough with a small, sharp knife. Bake at 425 degrees F for about 45 minutes, or until the top is golden.

Soda bread isn’t the prettiest, nor is it sweet, but it’s rustic and crusty exterior holds up great to stews.
