Is there anything cuter than curly hair on boys? Especially little baby boys? I think not! Maybe because my own mixed baby boy was born with beautiful, tight curls, I love to imagine all the boy hairstyles he’ll be able to rock as he grows up. But before we explore boy haircuts, we should take a look at all the cute little boy haircuts we have to choose from!
Curly Hair Boy Cuts
Boy hair cuts are like a whole new world – the language, the tools, there are many things to learn for a new mom. Today I’m exploring the world of haircuts for boys and I’m determined to find the perfect toddler boys haircut that will work well for mixed boy babies (like my sweetheart down below).
Truth be told, there isn’t much out there for mixed hair and our type of highly textured, yet often very loose, curl patterns. And while I think short boy haircuts are adorable, I love the curly hair boy haircuts that embrace versatility and unique style of boys with curly hair.
Before we give a barber or hairstylist the go-ahead on our baby haircuts, let’s review a few important caveats first. Consider this a Boys Curly Hair Cuts 101 cheat sheet! Read through all the tips to consider when and how to get your lil boy haircuts.

WHEN to get Haircut for Boy?
I’m in no rush for my babies to grow up. Even when it comes to adorably mixed boy hairstyles, I can wait as long as possible before starting his haircuts for babies. Cutting all his mixed curls off makes me so sad! Getting a baby haircut can dramatically alter the way a little boy looks and we’ve all heard about haircuts altering curl pattern and hair texture. But once they’re out of the baby stage, it might be time to start thinking about that haircut for toddler boy.
Little Boy Hair Cuts: FYI
Every baby’s hair will grow at different speeds, with varying thickness, patterns, and texture. Whereas lots of hair will make one-year-old baby boy hairstyles very easy, other babies might not have any hair at all! Deciding when to get infant boy haircuts is therefore totally up to you. Don’t go by age when deciding when to get baby’s first little boy curly haircuts. Instead, focus on these 3 questions. If any of the answers are “no”, wait a few more weeks or months…
- Does my toddler boy have enough hair to cut with scissors?
- Does my stylist know how to cut curly hair for boys?
- Will my baby/toddler sit still in order to safely get through little curly boy haircuts at this age?

HOW? Boy Haircuts with Curly Hair
My guy was a toddler by the time he got his first two-year-old boy haircut and I don’t regret waiting. Though not technically a baby anymore, he still seemed so small sitting in his airplane. His toddler boy haircut was short and trimmed, using only scissors to keep is curls natural. Here are 3 things I’ve learned about boy haircuts with curly hair to be mindful of…
- How to talk to a barber is an important skill when communicating your expectations for your curly hair baby boy. I’m not saying we need to learn how to cut boys haircuts, but we can learn a few key phrases to explain the look we’re aiming for.
- You don’t have to use clippers on your mixed boy haircuts, especially when baby ears are still developing and super sensitive. Frankly, I knew my toddler would never hold still with buzzers by his hairline and opted to only use scissors for all of his boy toddler haircuts.
- Think about how you want the hairline to look before sitting your curly hair boy in the barber seat. Many barbers will assume you want “lined up” edges (which means using the buzzer to create straight lines around their hairline), but I always opted for natural hairlines with our two-year-old boy haircuts.

Toddler Boy Hairstyles
So now that we have the basics of when and how of a baby boy haircut, let’s move on to the fun stuff of toddler boy hairstyles!!! Finding your own vibe and hair cutting style for boy will impact the way your son is perceived.
Generally speaking, many haircuts for little boys with curly hair will be shorter on the sides longer length at the top. Clippers can be used at varying lengths and are often used for the sides, although you can ask for scissors to be used too. Most baby boy hairstyles will embrace their naturally curly hair and is a great way to go for a baby first haircut style. You can also add designs and creative fades for curly hair.
List of Lil Boy Hairstyles
Trimmed Afro: This cut would take the natural shape of his mixed curly hair and trim it up into an even baby fro. Totally cute, but also a very modest haircut in terms of a hairstyle of baby boy. This was our guy’s first haircut!
Mini High Top Fade: Short on the sides with longer length on top is the natural progression from a trimmed afro. It’s a clean hair style combines all the best haircuts for 3-year-old boys. You can leave style for curl definition or comb out for an afro if you have enough texture.

Curly Faux Hawk: If you’re looking for cool boy hairdos for your curly hair boy, you’ll want to check out the Curly Faux Hawk. I wrote up our experience with this – and specifically how to talk to your barber to achieve the look – so check out the post below. Definitely big kids hairstyles for boys that anyone can rock!
Curly Man Bun: This is where my lil boys haircuts are currently at and, I have to say, the curly man bun is as cute as it is easy to maintain. We started moving towards this curly hair style years ago – during his 4 year old boy haircuts – and are still sticking to it. For starters, we save a ton of money! My husband was able to learn how to cut toddlers hair by watching videos, but cutting a boys hair is much easier when you keep a hard part and don’t worry about fading. One thing to be mindful of: cutting baby hair is a no-no with a man bun if you want a natural hairline because that hair will need to grow long enough to pull up into the bun. So keep the edges natural up top! (I’ll write more about his adorable Curly Man Bun soon!)

Shaved: Daddy D shaves his head and I know several moms of little boys who do the same. I’m not one of them. I love my boy’s beautiful curls too much to see them gone, even for just a short while.
That would be the one reason why I cut his hair sooner, rather than later: I want to make sure his hair stays healthy. The day after a deep condition, my baby boy’s curly hair is tightly coiled and snug to his scalp. So if you’re wondering how to curl a boy’s hair, sit under a hair steamer for awhile!
We reviewed a bunch of topics in this post on haircuts for boys with curly hair. From learning how to talk to your barber and which tools they’ll use to deciding which age is best for baby’s first haircut, I’ll leave you with what I tell my kids anytime hair becomes a topic of discussion:
The most beautiful hair is healthy hair. Take care of your curls and they’ll take care of you!

April 30, 2014 at 9:26 am¡Ay Bendito! Estamos en las mismas. 🙂 Mi nene tiene el pelo igualito al tuyo con rizos hermosos 🙂 We actually took him to a barber to trim it down a little on the sides, and cut very little at the top. De cariño, we call him our “curly top.”

April 30, 2014 at 11:07 amI have a cousin whose son is mixed as well. In the shorter lengths she let his hair afro out. After a while she began to put it into hair styles. Braids mostly, pony tails, and twists. He’s never had a haircut and he is almost 3. His hair is probably the same length as my “Love Bug”. Email me, I’ll send you pics!! (They’re adorable btw!).
However, for my son “Brother”, I too am at a loss of what to do with his hair. His texture is a little bit more like mine, with his curls more relaxed than his sisters. However, in the back it can get pretty dry and matted if I neglect it for too long. His hair isn’t long by any means, but it does have a mind of its own and I’m totally at a loss of what to do with it. As for his hair care, when I give him the same care as Love Bug’s his head just looks like a wet/oily/greasy mess! That is why I’m constantly asking other moms what they are doing with their son’s hair.
For Sebas, I think his hair is BEAUTIFUL! I LOVE IT!!! I guess I would be against cutting it since as you mentioned he will probably cut it for the rest of his life. But I do get the feeling of figuring out what to “do” with it before he ends up with a bob that matches Alina’s!

April 30, 2014 at 2:22 pmHere Here! I’m a mum with straighter than straight hair, which my lil’ man (few months younger than yours) inherited. His hair was so full at birth, but started to fall out on the sides from all the infant sleeping, that we were forced to cut it very early just to even it out. I think your little guy’s hair is absolutely beautiful and so full of character. Hearing so much on this topic lately, I stand by those moms that inspire to do what feels right for their family and ignore those who only offer criticism.

November 26, 2014 at 8:50 pmmy son is not biracial but he has beautiful curly locks that I thought I would cut at the age of one. I get harassed by his uncle to cut it at least twice a week. At 16 months I refuse to even think about it. However, I know he can’t have these curly locks most of his life, so I’ve also been looking at ideas for haircuts. I will say even looking at examples the very though of cutting his locks make me teary eyed.
Still on the fence!!!

July 26, 2015 at 4:33 pmMy son is 8 and I have never cut his hair! Yes, I get a lot of people asking me when I am going to cut it… oh well! From what I have heard from all of my black friends and family, if you cut a black or mixed kids hair too early ESPECIALLY with clippers it can ruin the texture of their hair forever! My brother also has two mixed little boys, with the first one they cut his hair early and started shaving it early as well… his texture changed completely and he basically has “nappy” hair. They have a one year old now and will NOT be cutting his hair early on because they learned. One of the reasons that people choose to cut is because they do not know how to manage it and it looks better than a messy little afro. Coconut oil or baby oil gel for babies and grease for the big kids along with styling does the trick. I wish I could post a picture here of my son so that you can see what I do with his hair which is down to his butt. Instead of having an afro when he was toddler he had luxurious curls hanging down perfectly, our friends called him baby AC because they thought his hair looked just like AC Slater from Saved by the Bell lol! My point is for a clean look you don’t have to cut and if you do, beware that you could forever change the texture of your son’s hair. I will be cutting my son’s hair soon because it is just so long now, but… no clippers! Hope this is helpful to someone out there, I know I sure appreciated this advice from my family and friends.

March 3, 2016 at 1:01 pmMy 17 month old is mixed and I adore his curls. I am confused as what to use as I get soo many comments and feedback but it is all contradicting. I do not want to cut his hair even though it is uneven as I’ve heard you forever change the texture. I have used Shea Moisture for kids and J & J. Any input would be appreciated. Sincerely, a confused Mommy!

March 13, 2016 at 12:16 pmMy son is mixed he is 21 mos he has had two haircuts now first was at 16 mos 2nd was at 19 mos i did not let them shave it yet just trim because i couldn’t manage it any longer and he dont like it combed or picked out no matter if it’s wet with conditoner or oiled he will slap the comb or pick and cry! His texture changed a lil but not dramatically and i still am only getting it trimmed until he is 2.5-3 i will probably do a shave i am interested to see how he looks with a shave i do like his curls tho but his back hair was always more rough than the top of his head hair very tight curls tho i am not skilled or talented enough to braid it otherwise i probably would
