Right around the corner from our home, within walking distance actually, is one of those adorable gift stores filled with keepsakes and greeting cards. The kids and I love going in there as seasons change to check out the latest ways to document one’s legacy – but I have to admit, finding the perfect greeting card has been a headache (and a heartache) for me.
Want to know something I’ve only ever told my best friend? A long time ago, I dreamed of starting my own greeting card line. No lie! It was aimed to represent the new American woman raising new American families. As a bicultural Latina, married to an African American man, I really struggled when buying greeting cards for “us”. My style leaned towards modern fonts and colors – and I love a great photography styled card – but never saw myself in them. Let alone a woman that looked like me with a man that looked like Daddy D. It really upset me, but its just another nuance of being in an interracial marriage and raising multiracial children.
I’m excited to share the parts of Hallmark that I love most (and there are many!). Hallmark is on a road to change the lack of diversity in the greeting card world. With their Mahogany and Sinceramente greeting card lines, I can find the modern prints and styles I love, but with the bicultural and multiracial flare that represents me and my family. And for what I can’t find, I can customize! I’ve given Daddy D the “Te Amo” card below. And how flipping adorable is that little superhero? Flex your cuteness, little man! I need that card in my life!Through their Hallmark Cards Reward program, you can also earn points every time you buy a Hallmark card at more than 30,000 grocery stores and drug stores across the nation. For every 5 cards you buy, not counting boxed card sets, you earn 1 reward to redeem gift cards, discounts, dollars off, and more other rewards from partners, such as: Starbucks, Nike or Land’s End.
While I usually swipe my Hallmark Rewards card while in-store, you can also download the mobile app to register your rewards by scanning the barcode of your purchased card from most retailers. Just yesterday, for instance, Alina and I were shopping for a friend’s get well card that I got for free because of my rewards. Pretty cool, right? And while I tried to get Alina to choose one of these adorable bilingual cards from the Sinceramente line, she opted for this doggie card instead. Why is my kid so obsessed with dogs?!
Perhaps one day you’ll see my greeting card line in Hallmark – a collection of beautiful photography and heartfelt messages that resonates with the bicultural family raising multiracial kids. Until then, I am pleased that Hallmark has graced the greeting card world with images we can identify with. It’s the little things, as they say.
