Do You Let Them Pick Their Own Car Seats?
Despite being a Britax Ambassador, I’m still very particular about the car seats my kids sit in. I have a few friends who are constantly researching the newest child safety products on the market and I tune into their opinions regularly to ensure the choices I make are the best ones. Even though I work with the company on a regular basis, my kids sit in Britax car seats and strollers because they are the best and offer 5 point harnesses for much longer than other options. I don’t allow my girl to choose her car seat – based on fabric options or style, etc – because safety is all that matters.
But, with that being said, as my little girl grows, so does her desire for independence. She wants to express herself and her ability to be autonomous. She wants to show the world that she’s a big girl! So when Britax checked in with their online advocates at the start of the school year, I decided to give Alina the chance to create a car seat style that she can call her own.
Previously, I had two car seats for my two kids that matched each other and coordinated with the interior fabric of our family car. I liked the look! It was a combination of a tan/black and had a mama-chic, sophisticated flair. I was worried that, if I gave my preschooler the choice, she would pick a fabric choice that was riddled in pinks or flowers. That’s great for a bedroom or clothes or toys, but for a family car? I wasn’t so sure, but decided to offer her the choice anyway.
She currently sits in the Frontier 90 with ClickTight technology (which is AMAZING and so easy to install! Check out my full car seat review) and so was limited in her choices. I wanted her to have a few options, so we also checked out the selections available in store. Ultimately, she was SO happy when she saw an animal print option. My girl is a HUGE animal lover and she was jumping up and down with excitement when we installed it.
Letting my girl define her own car seat style has been a great adventure in autonomy and independence. She has ownership of her car seat and has been taking great care not to get it dirty or worn out. What a great lesson, right? And the best part is, her safety isn’t compromised.
Do you allow your little ones to choose their car seat fabrics? Do you think it makes a difference?
