When it comes to what I really love to receive, there are only a few things I covet. Honestly, I can’t think of a better gift than a camera for mom! Your photo lovin’ mama already has a camera? Then check out these awesome camera lenses that will for sure be loved by any mom photographer! (this is totally NOT sponsored – just a collection of lenses that I swoon over in hopes that maybe a certain someone catches this post. His name might start with a D. Do you know him?)
It’s been over two years since I started shooting with my DSLR. Certainly, getting a camera for mom is a great idea. Another great idea is ditching the kit lens for one that will allow you to control and learn the mechanics of photography. But with so many lenses to choose from, which should I – um, I mean your mom photographer – get?
I’ve been using my 50mm 1.8 almost exclusively for years. I bought it second hand (from a trusted friend) and it has given me some wonderful images I will cherish forever. The 50mm is a stellar portrait lens but it is really, really tight indoors. Also, being so affordable, the f/1.8 is actually made of plastic – and mine is officially broke. It won’t auto focus outside of center and its shutter speed is nightmarishly slow. I would LOVE to upgrade my 50mm f/1.8 to a wider aperture of f/1.4 – still affordable, but higher quality and more light.
Having only used my 50mm, I am accustomed to working with a prime lens. And these three prime lenses are so perfect for your mom photographer, it will be hard to decide which one to get first! The macro would be amazing for newborn shoots or detail shots or even a serious telephoto image – I can think of a zillion things I would love to shoot with this 100mm f/2.8. The 85mm is another great portrait lens, and one that I would love to have in my arsenal after I upgrade my camera body. I have a cropped sensor, so the 85 would likely just double my 50mm. And, who doesn’t love a gorgeous wide angle? I’m hoping that a vacation this summer will call for some landscape shoots with this 28mm. *hint, hint*
And then there is a collection of varying zoom lenses that takes action shots to a new level. With kids, you need something that can transition to up close, telephoto range to pulled out wide angles – but I don’t want to sacrifice light! The Canon 24-70mm f/2.8 has great range, moving quickly from wide to tight, but the large aperture lets in plenty of light allowing you so much control over an image. Sounds dreamy, right? But…
If you think an intrictae device like the one mentioned above sounds pricey, you’d be right. The Canon model below will cost you four figures (*hint, hint*). There is a similar Tamron model that gets decent reviews for half the price, and at full disclosure, I will likely get that one. Well, not me exactly 🙂
Do you have any of these lenses? What do you love about them?
Help a mom photographer out – which lenses can’t you live without?

December 3, 2013 at 2:19 amGreat list! I have that Tamron zoom, and it lives on my camera most of the time. It’s not as tack sharp as my Canon 50mm, but like you say, great for chasing kids around!
