I’ve got two kids and a ton of curly hair to manage in this household and I love every minute of it, but these curly boy haircuts make me ridiculously happy! I live for them!!!! It was not long ago when I wondered when my curly baby boy would get his first big boys haircut and now here we are planning which curly hair fade to get next! Seriously man, time is on beast mode over here. Why do our babies grow so fast?!
When my son would get his little guy haircuts, I remember feeling super overwhelmed with his new look. I needed a couple days to get used to his new curly haircuts! That’s why I believe that the best haircut for curly hair is more complicated than just picking out a photo and needs to account for your baby’s temperament, curly type, etc. For example, I love boys with long hair, but my son struggles with the patience needed to manage long biracial hair. He has super curly hair, even tighter coils than his sister. But his curl definition is glorious so, even if curly mixed hair care is a lot of work, I didn’t want to get his first toddler haircut too soon or too cut off much.
Adorable Curly Boy Haircuts
For his , we knew we’d be going to Kidville at Tivoli Village. The kids have been going to classes there for years. We love all the teachers, have never once had an issue, and I’ve chatted with Miss Becca (the in-house stylist) about the impending cut for months and months in advance. I kept asking her, “so you’re sure you know what to do with curly hair? You’re surrrrrrre?”. My worst nightmare was taking my baby boy to a cute salon that chopped his hair all raggedy. What we experienced at Kidville was anything but. And for full disclosure, although I am a Kidville Ambassador, this post is not sponsored.

men’s haircuts For his first curly hair cut, we knew we’d be going to Kidville at Tivoli Village. The kids have been going to classes there for years. The conversation that finally convinced me that Miss Becca could handle the job was when she explained how she uses only scissors. She felt razors made too much noise that scared the kids and weren’t needed for baby hair. I loved and appreciated this child-focused approach, and wondered if a regular grown up salon would have had that foresight.
Sebastian was very thick, tight curls. His hair resembles Alina’s very much, except he doesn’t have the coarse patch of hair at his hairline like she does. He’s not even 2 and a half yet, so I expect his texture to change a bit as he ages. We follow the same curly mixed hair care routine for infants that I used for Alina, but to be honest, not as diligently as I did with her. Sometimes his hair wouldn’t be done at all, and it was becoming to get out of hand.
Sebastian’s haircut was a family affair. As you can see above, even big sister was excited to document his new look. He was a great little boy, only wiggly towards the end.
As for me, I was super excited to see my little man’s new do. But I will admit, this moment below, when she lifted the hair so that we can decide on the length to cut, took my breath away. I almost swooped up my baby right then and there and ran away!
In the end, we decided to cut a good amount off. Go big or go home, right? Yet we still left a substantial amount of curl. The sides are much shorter, with a bit more length on the top, and certainly way more shape than his all-natural do. I don’t see us going any shorter anytime soon. This is the perfect length for maintenance and curl, in my opinion.
I about fell onto the floor when I saw the finished product! My baby boy looks so dang CUTE!….
After his hair cut, we enjoyed the farmer’s market at Tivoli, grabbed lunch and let the kids play in the playground. Sebastian certainly had a pep in his step, feeling all fly and fresh. He said hello to everyone and got sooo much attention. Alina would proudly tell the passersbyers, “He got his very first haircut today and he did soooo good.”. Haha. My little mama.
Well, we did it. Our little man got his first hair cut. I love it and am very grateful to Miss Becca at Kidville for a beautiful job and for a little boy that isn’t traumatized or anything crazy.
My little Cubanito,
With your cleaned-up do, fat belly and dapper attire, you remind me so much of a little Cuban boy. It’s crazy how a simple hair cut can make you seem so much older, way less baby-ish and, in general, just so dang adorable. I swoon for you, my boy, and you totally know it.
I’m madly in love and the biggest gift you give me is loving me back.
Just like your sister, I hope you always hold dear your curly mixed hair. It’s so beautiful, my son, and filled with the love and heritage that your legacy comes from. As you grow and take charge of your hair, I hope you never loose your curls. They make you special and unique, drawing people into your life that embrace and appreciate those values too. Straight hair is cool and all, but it’s okay (and fun!) to be different. We’re all so proud of you, my sweet boy.

July 22, 2014 at 4:31 pmI really like his haircut! My son is mixed and we’ve been discussing cutting his hair for a few months now just to maintain it easier. This is the style I’ve been looking to show her and maybe some light fading on the sides. But your son looks great! Like a grown little man!!

July 23, 2014 at 12:27 pmThanks, LaShoun! It’s hardly been a month and this little man needs to be freshened up already! I wanted to go even tighter on the side and the stylist suggested we didn’t. I’m happy with what we got…. we can always go shorter next time. Have fun kissing up your new little dude 🙂 !!!

July 24, 2014 at 7:10 amMy son Noah has really long hair and he’s only 20 months. I really don’t want to cut it but his coils are very tight and his hair stays in a ponytail. I’m going to cut it in a few days. He’s going to be reinvented after his cut

July 28, 2014 at 10:16 amHow exciting!!! Sebastian is almost ready for another cut, but I’m going to wait awhile. It’s crazy how fast their hair grows!

October 22, 2014 at 11:25 amThanks, Kalie! I was just talking to my husband about whether to get our boy a second cut or not. It’s a been a few months now and it’s growing so beautifully… I don’t think I want to cut it again! Maybe we’ll let it go another few months before making the decision. I bet your little man would look so adorable with a cleaned up cut!

February 6, 2015 at 3:48 pmFirst let me say that your children are gorgeous! You are doing an amazing job with them. My son is multiracial, but he does not have the kinky curly textured hair he has the very fine loose curly textured hair, are there any tips or hair care products for his hair type.

April 12, 2016 at 7:55 pmHi,love the look.so cute
I cut my son’s hair short and worried if itl grow back curly…did your son’s grow back curly?
Vanessa Bell
April 16, 2016 at 12:34 amHi! Yup, still soft, tight curls. He’s had about 5 haircuts in total (he just turned 4 years old), and though they’re always short cuts, he never has had clippers used. Just scissors. I’m sure your little dude’s curls will come back!

April 16, 2016 at 12:09 amLove your son’s hair I’m struggling with the idea of cutting my son Anakins hair he just turned a year old in march and already everyone is mentioning a haircut . I’m starting to think well is it time to cut it? His hair is more like mine but he has beautiful loose curls verses my straight hair. The only part of his hair I may see as an issue is the sides there a bit tighter curls than the rest and they look shorter I’ve even had comments in a joking way saying the looks like” bozo the clown” it’s very offensive to me because I am in love with his hair. I don’t think they realize that it’s rude and hurtful to say such things but family many times forget their filters. Am I wrong to want to hold on to the curls because as his mother he has the most beautiful hair in the world and to me cutting it is like making him grow up.

April 16, 2016 at 12:27 amI totally agree, Kara! Do not cut your sweet boy’s hair until you’re ready. He’ll always be your baby, though!

April 18, 2016 at 5:44 pmFound your blog searching for how to cut my little guy’s hair. I’ve got biracial twins- half Afro-cubano, half write American. My boy got w head full of thick, sleek textured, curls and I am so not ready to cut them, but they’re starting to get out of hand! Daddy wants to wait till the summer whe we take them to Cuba to meet their family. Your pictures make me see that cutting his hair won’t be the end of the world! His twin sis has thinner and a bit more textured, but still curly hair. Love those curls!

April 28, 2016 at 3:05 pmHow old was your daughter when she had her first haircut? Our daughter is around 17 months old and we struggle with fighting some frizz at the ends no. matter. what. Some people have suggested we get her ends trimmed to keep the hair healthy and maybe eliminate the frizzy ends, but I am a little hesitant to get it cut since I don’t want to “ruin” her cute curls or keep her hair from growing out … any advice?

May 2, 2016 at 11:41 amWe actually have not had her hair trimmed at all… she’s 6 and needs one bad, though! Check out @curlfactor on IG. She’s a Diva Curl stylist and does AMAZING work! That’s where I’ll be taking Alina soon. Good luck!
