Gametime in Las Vegas!
We’ve been here 10 years and we’re still upset that there are no professional sports to cheer on. In Southern California, we had various baseball teams to support (and even a football team when we were younger), as well as hockey and soccer and basketball and… you get the idea. We’ve always been supporters of our local minor league baseball teams, the Vegas 51s, but strolling I decided it was time to support our collegiate team (UNLV’s Vegas Rebels!) with DIY Cheerleader Pom Poms.
Even as a Walmart mom, I was shocked to see the availability of UNLV gametime gear at Walmart. Their online selection of UNLV Rebels gear is so cool, but the adorable apparel choices in-store was not to be missed! My girl got this cute shirt, the baby boy got a basketball uniform and I got a scooped neckline sweatshirt. Very fashionable, I know! Check out walmart.com/gametime for more ideas on how to celebrate your team with recipes, crafts and more. After you make these super easy cheerleader pom poms, you’re family is ready to cheer on your favorite team!
Cheerleader Pom Pom Tutorial
This craft is easy and super affordable to make! For this craft, you’ll need two party table clothes in your team’s colors. They’re cheap – less than $1 each. I used 1 red, 1 back and it was plenty for these two, very full pom poms.
Fold the plastic table cover into a square and cut along all the seams to create many square pieces. The bigger the square, the bigger the pom pom. Repeat step on second color.
Alternating between colors, stack approximately 20-30 squares on top of each other. For this next step, I would secure the stack onto your work surface with tape that is easy to peel off, like masking tape. Using sharp scissors, cut straight lines up one side of the square with equal spaces between cuts. Stop the cut slightly before the center of the square. Repeat this step on the side parallel to the first cuts.
Now comes the tricky part: turn the cut side away from you and the uncut side towards you. Folder the stack like an accordion, folding two spaces then flipping over and folding it back. You know what I mean, right? Once the stacks are folder like an accordion, use duck tape or another strong adhesive tape to tightly secure the center. None of this has to be precise, so don’t worry about cuts being uneven or the stacks not lining up perfectly.
Now, onto fluffing! This takes the longest time. Settle in on the couch for a show or during naptime. Starting with the two top cuts, twist and pull up. Take the next two cuts, and twist and pull up again. Keep doing this until you’ve twisted and pulled each and every section, making sure to create a bulbous shape with a good mix of the two colors. Easy, right? 😉
Now… give me an L! Give me a V! Go Las Vegas Rebels!
