This was no ordinary Halloween party invitations. This Harry Potter Halloween party included owls arriving on our doorstep carrying acceptance letters and train tickets to Hogwarts. The printables and details in the invitations set the tone for a great event. And how cute are these Harry Potter owl balloons? Cheap and easy to make! From there, the adventure began.

Owls Everywhere

The owls continued to fly invitations throughout the party, hanging from above in all colors and shapes. They were beautifully made from paper and milk cartons.

Arriving at Hogwarts

We arrived at the “train depot” right on time and were transformed into Hogwarts students with our own wizard robes and wands to complete our school uniform upon entering. The brick wall is a white plastic table cloth made with a brick stencil. Super easy! Some Hogwarts students left their luggage at the entrance, which we’re hoping they made it to school in time!

Hogwarts Sorting

Once at Hogwarts, “students” had to be sorted in their proper houses, all with great formality. This was a fun Harry Potter party games for adults and kids. Each student was given a scarf to stay warm. From there we attended our transfiguration class which was held in the great hall (the dining room), adorned with floating candles and house banners. Even the bathroom was decorated to evoke the entrance to the chamber of secrets with Moaning Myrtle and Vasiliki.

Harry Potter Halloween Decorations

Decor, decor and more decor! The Harry Potter Halloween decorations were EPIC! Each shelf was artfully styled to represent the classes at Hogwarts: defense against the dark arts, potions, divination, herbology, care of magical creatures and transfiguration class (where we actually painted pumpkins as a Halloween party game). The halls of Hogwarts are lined with portraits of professors, headmasters, and famous witches and wizards, making a grand entrance. We even had adorable house-elves.

Wizard Details Everywhere

The small details made all the difference. From framing printables of Harry’s favorite professors to creating a shelf with all the concoctions and ingredients a young wizard student would need…. we had it all at this Harry Potter party. No detail was left out.

Harry Potter Party Games

In true keeping, we played many Harry Potter party games. Including the transformation game, there was also a Quidditch game set up outside. Complete with browns to ride on, we ran around outside trying to get a ball into a hole. It was a blast! There were also Harry Potter movies airing and books being read aloud for theatrical fun.

Hogwarts Dining Hall

But in case you thought all the action was over, upon entering the “dining hall”, the Hogwarts decorations blow us all away! Floating candles adorned the space. Made with white paper rolled around electronic tea lights and hung with thread, it’s an easy DIY to do at your party too.

Every Hogwarts house banner was in attendance too, bring the entire party together.

Harry Potter Party Food Ideas

There was so much going on that I failed to take photos of our dinner, but it was in keeping with the Harry Potter theme. Served that night were mini Sheppard pie, salad, roasted veggies, and rolls.  For dessert, we had pumpkin pastry, chocolate frogs, peppermint toads and lemon drops.

Harry Potter Party

To say this Harry Potter party was epic would be an understatement. We all had a great time and are grateful to the host for making this event so memorable for all.

Hi Tanya, I believe she printed images from the net. Everything from this party was DIY. She didn’t buy anything pre-made. Crazy, right?! Thanks for stopping by!

I see you posted this party forever ago, but love the details. Any way you could tell me how your sister made the owls. We are having a After Prom party at the high school Harry Potter theme and Tight budget. If you could be so kind as to help me figure this out. Looks like she used something inside brown shipping paper tube (maybe a tissue box or 2 litter bottle?)and folded over the top like a gift to for the ears, the tail is what’s challenging me the most, can’t seem to get it to for.

Love everything about this! Especially those owls delivering the mail- such a memorable scene, and your sister did a great job with it here. What is on the wall that is opposite the portraits and to the right of the Hogwarts banner?

How did you make the owls? I am having a harry potter’s bday this weekend. I can pretty much figure it out, but do you have helium balloons inside for them to sort of just float around with?

How did you get the portraits to be so large?

    • Vanessa
      January 7, 2014 at 3:41 pm

The portraits were cropped and printed in quarters and then displayed as a full image. Does that make sense?

Thanks Vanessa, my little crew has been trying to duplicate, but can’t seem to quite get it. If there’s any way to reach out to who made them (thought was your sister)and give us a little guidance it would be much appreciated. I’m thinking they aren’t as hard as I’m making them because it looks like you had quite a number of them at the party. So again, any help would be great.
PS loved your Disney Cruise blog, we took our kids on that ship 2x they LOVED it and and mine were ages 6, 9, & 12 the second time and would do it again in a minute.
