This letter to my son is a little more special than the previous ones because, well, my baby boy is turning ONE! He is officially embarking on his toddler years, and the milestone is a bit emotional for me. It’s insane how quickly this year has flown, and as I sit in my house filled with decor, ready for his Very Hungry Caterpillar party, I can’t help but let my mind wander on the day he was born. Boy, has he changed since those first few months!
A Letter to My Son On His First Birthday
Dear baby boy,
You are the coolest! This month I have seen so much growth in you, especially in terms of your communication. You say mama like it’s nobody’s business, as you are now a bonafide mama’s boy. And yup. I love every second of it. You love to sing! And dance (which you know as bailar). You love to pretend like you’re on the phone, saying ahh-o? We answer back when you place the phone on our ear. You love that game. You are constantly saying go, go, go when we’re out the door, or hi! and hey!. I suppose Mama says that a lot because you love to repeat me! When you hear a dog bark, you grow still and whisper oogie, oogie, oogie. You love to whisper, and pretty much everyone I know loves to hear you whisper too. You love to babble long run-on sentences, and we babble right back at you. It makes you happy. You listen to simple commands, like hey, no! (duh) or take that out of your mouth! (which I’m saying constantly). You have been signing leche very clearly for a while now, but now I see you signing for agua. It looks like your rubbing your ear, and took me a while to figure out what you were actually doing. You still haven’t got a hold of eating or sleep, but I’m sure you’ll get there.
You have been walking for months, and are pretty much at an all-out run now. You love to climb but aren’t a brute about it. You are actually fairly ginger and deliberate, which I really love. You are certainly EVERYWHERE, but not in a destructive, wild way. You love to clap your hands and play patty cake. You love it when I sing Duermete Mi Niño, and that brings me so much pleasure.
You are a big boy, but not huge. We visit the Dr next week, but you have been averaging in 75% for both height and weight. You have the most beautiful eyes and lips. The lips are definitely your Dad’s, which is a feature I love about him too. Daddy says you have his ears, too. Your hands are big with long fingers, and your feet… well, those came from my side. Sorry, about that 🙂

We are weaning you from breast milk, but it won’t be as easy as it was with Alina. And actually, I’m not in a rush. Maybe I’ll keep you on for another couple of months, especially since you are not the best sleeper (you are pretty horrible, actually) and boobin’ you is the quickest way to get you back to sleep. I’m hoping for your next birthday we will be getting a full night’s sleep again.
Like every love letter to my son before, I want you to know how much you are adored. You and your sister are the centers of our lives, and you Dad and I would not have it any other way. As you grow, this will change I’m sure, but while you two are so young, we are perfectly content in putting you first.
I love you, sweet Sol de mi vida. Happy FIRST birthday!
Para hoy y todos de mis dias despues, te quiero tanto.

You two created some BEAUTIFUL kids! It’s a joy seeing you as a mother and having the privilege to witness parts of your journey. I can surely relate to the joy of watching them grow and develope into little personalities. Happy birthday Sebastian. He seriously looks just a male version of Alina. Adorable! Good work y’all.
