Designing An Outdoor Space That Our Family Will Love

Our backyard is finally coming together! After buying patio furniture last year and a massive swing set for the kids, all we need are a few elements to design an outdoor space that sets the stage for family legacy building and memory making. I’m excited to partner with Pier 1 Imports and the beautiful ladies at Latina Bloggers Connect to share my patio ideas. They sent me on a shopping adventure to design an outdoor space, but first I needed inspiration…

Before purchasing patio furniture last year, I went back and forth on whether the space would serve as a dining or living function. Ultimately, we went with a comfy living space. My dream would be to design an outdoor space that is big enough for both, but for now, comfy seating overlooking the kids playing while the husband bar-b-ques is not such a bad option.

To get started on our patio ideas, I checked out the Pier 1 Imports Outdoor Oasis Pinterest Board. I found it really helpful in assessing the different elements an outdoor space needs to be extraordinary. Here’s my plan…

My Patio Makeover Plan

1. Minimize stucco focal wall: Our home is stucco and I just can’t stand looking at it. I was so pleased to find such beautiful pieces from Pier 1 that could be used both indoors and out. I especially loved the Pinwheel Flora canvas art piece (upper left) made of fabric treated for UV protection and Carved Wall Decor in Cool (upper right). Since I’ve made DIY fabric wall panels before, I might even DIY it again!

2. Bring in more color: I just love the vibrant colors of Pier 1. It’s kind of what they’re known for, right? Bright colors can cheer up a space, creating a happy backdrop for memory making. To bring in more color in my outdoor space design, I plan to go big with pillows and add one of these adorable and functional Garden Stools in Green to my patio (bottom right).

3. Focus on all the senses: My babies are still small, so the simplest things bring them joy. In designing an outdoor space, we’ve brought in many flowers and herbs. The kids love to smell the flowers and eat the herbs. We’ve added an outdoor rug that they love to stand on barefoot. My patio ideas extend to creating an experience for all their senses, including outdoor lighting for night-time ambiance. I LOVE these Bohemian Mercury Hanging Lanterns, but they didn’t have them at my store (bottom left). I may end just stringing cafe globe lights, instead. I also envision us sitting outside listening to a wind chime as the wind blows. Alina loves sound, and I can see us making great memories together while enjoying the songs of our patio. This Beaded Peacock Windchime (bottom center) is even more stunning in person. Like they say at Pier 1, I got what “speaks to me”.

So that’s it. My modest patio ideas for designing an outdoor space that is pretty and functional. Because honestly, a space that just looks pretty isn’t good enough for me – it needs to serve a purpose and help me set a foundation of memory making and family legacy building.
